Pilates has been practiced in the United States since the 1920s and is named after its inventor, Joseph H. Pilates.
The method encompasses more than 500 controlled, precise movements, designed to improve musculoskeletal function and stretch and strengthen muscle without adding bulk. Performed on a padded floor mat and with special apparatus, the exercises require concentration and deep, coordinated breathing. Benefits include exceptional abdominal strength, greater flexibility, increased energy, mental relaxation, improved posture and an all-over feeling of rejuvenation.
